Winchester First
A Kentucky Main Street
Renaissance Kentucky Program
Downtowns are the heart of our communities. Kentucky’s downtown districts are historically the centers of town life and commerce, but as the result of social and transportation changes over the past thirty or forty years, these areas experienced a loss of their vitality and community value. Fortunately, most downtowns have remained the centers of government, finance and employment and the focus of community life. They represent many years of investment, worthy of preservation, and they are a tangible link to the heritage cherished by the citizens of the Commonwealth.
Bringing a sense of life and vitality back to the downtown area is an important aspect in the course of preserving a community’s heritage and planning its future development. It takes community-wide determination to make the heart of a community a source of pride. It takes effort to change people's limited perceptions of downtown and to broaden the range of its future possibilities. It takes education to understand how downtown buildings were meant to look and work. And, it takes commitment to keep public areas attractive and maintained, and a solid understanding of the realities of today's economy to determine what businesses can thrive in downtown.
Revitalizing downtown means bringing people back downtown - to shop, to do business, to meet their friends and neighbors, to learn and to enjoy themselves.
The Kentucky Main Street Program is a revitalization program of the Kentucky Heritage Council, the Commonwealth's historic preservation office. It utilizes a four point approach begun in 1977 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
